Let’s just call it like it is, shall we?

Winter can be... a bit shit.

It’s freezing cold (perhaps an exaggeration if you live in the southern hemisphere), it’s windy, there’s rain, there’s windy rain (the worst)… it’s practically screaming at you to curl up under your doona watching Netflix with a mug of hot chocolate for three months straight.

It’s no wonder that your motivation to get to the gym can plummet just as quickly as the temperature does.

So as winter approaches we’ve put together five ways to keep you on track with your fitness goals and help you get your butt to the gym:

1. Find a routine you can stick to

Can’t face cold rainy mornings? No problem, stay snug in your bed for as long as you want and train in the evenings instead, and on the weekends when you don’t have to get up so early. If your work structure allows for it, try training on your lunch break. If there’s a will, there’s a way.

2. Get warm before you get cold

If you MUST train in the mornings, have a hot shower as soon as you wake up. The hot water will get your blood circulating, help to loosen up joints and have you feeling more alert and ready to go before you step out into the unforgiving cold air.

3. Force your friends to train with you

Imagine if your friend promised they’d train with you, so you dragged your cold body out of bed and made it to gym only to discover they’d stood you up and stayed in bed... Yeah, nobody wants to be that gal, so promise a friend you’ll meet them at the gym and you’ll be 3000% more likely to show up.

4. Set yourself up for success

Have everything ready to go the night before. Lay out your clothes, pack your gym gear, meal prep your breakfast or workout shake. Remove as many hurdles as possible between you and getting to the gym. I’ve actually slept in my tights on multiple occasions so I don’t have to worry about getting changed in the cold! (True story, not sorry).

5. Harden up

Yep, you read that correctly!

These strategies might provide you with a kick start but discipline will keep you going. At the end of the day, you’ve simply got to suck it up and deal with a bit of discomfort.

Remind yourself of WHY you want to train and how disappointed you’ll be if simply not wanting to get out of bed was the only reason you didn’t achieve your goals.
